The combustion engine camshaft (1) carries annular cams (2) which are rotatably adjustable on the shaft via a coupling element (7) actuated as a function of engine parameters, such as by a centrifugal regulator (9). The cams are carried on the shaft via a screw thread (14), whilst the element (7) is axially movable by the regulator. The element may be secured on a rod (6) which is axially movable by the regulator against a spring (16). It may be provided with a claw (8) engaging an annular collar (4) on the cam. Further cams (3) may be similarly adjustable, one set of cams being inlet and the other set exhaust valve cams.
