Layered insulation for hot gas conduit from reactor - is compressed by bolts at corners and centres of cover plates

A large rectangular section conduit for high pressure and temp. gas travelling from a gas-cooled reactor or breeder passes round a right-angle bend towards a circular section steam producer and is concentrically surrounded by a channel for cold gas travelling in the opposite direction. The hot conduit is lined with multiple thermal insulation layers sepd. by intermediate sheets and internally covered by square plates held on a support structure by through bolts, compressing the insulation. Each bolt is located where four cover plates meet and carries two spaced washers between which the plates are gripped. The gaps between cover plates are covered by strips. At the centre of each plate is a further insulation-compressing holding bolt passing through washers. Between the layers are further washers and spacer rings. The retaining and covering washers are coated with wear-resistant material. Low stress and wear increase insulation life. The hot-gas support structure is relatively cool and hence needs less expensive material.
