Flux for continuous casting of steel - consists of refractory metal oxide, fluxing agent, and cellulosic material

Flux comprises (1) a sintered or fused composition comprising a refractory metal oxide and a fluxing agent and (2) cellulosic material. The cellulosic material is pref. in an amount of 1 to 10% by wt. The cellulosic material is pref. wood flour, comminuted willow waste, crushed and dried bagasse or crushed and dried Norfolk reed. More pref. the cellulosic material is crushed and dried bagasse from which most of the fibre has been removed. The refractory oxide is pref. calcium oxide more pref. together with alumina and the fluxing agent is pref. silica, pref. together with another fluxing agent such as fluoride. No clinker forms during melting down in use.
