Reflective filler resin coatings for radiation scintillator - to protect reactive components and enhance instrument sensitivity

The interfaces between elements (4) of a scintillator for detecting X-rays or gamma rays are coated with a resin transparent to such rays and filled with a powder which is a reflector for such rays. Used for mfr. of detectors for conversion of radiation to electrical signals for e.g. body scanning instruments used for medical purposes, to inhibit lateral diffusion between adjacent elements and thus improve scanning resolution. For detonators or reflectors of reactive materials such as cesium iodide, sodium metal, magnesia or titanium oxide, the resin matrix provides protection against ambient oxidation, moisture or other reagents. Use of reflective fillers results in better instrument sensitivity than use of fillers absorbent of X or gamma rays.
