<p>1329728 Container closures H-C INDUSTRIES Inc 25 Sept 1970 [26 Sept 1969] 45746/70 Heading B8T [Also in Division C4] A coded article comprises a body having a resinous surface at and below which a normally invisible fluorescent dye is inorporated in selected areas of the surface in shapes forming coded indicia 18b (or 18 in Figs. 1, 2, not shown) visible in U.V. light but substantially invisible in normal light. Fluorescent dyes are intended to include brightening agents. The Figures apply to a crown bottle cap and the legend may identify manufacturer, production flavour. The resin may be a varnish, an epoxy ester of a drying oil such as dehydrated castor oil being instanced, and thermoset resin materials such as phenolformaldehyde and formaldehyde resins, substrate (20) (Fig. 3, not shown) of electrolytic tin plate or A1 with organic sizing 22 and organic pigmented coating 24. Decorative or functional ink pattern 16 is applied in one or more colours, then protective clear or slightly pigmented finishing varnish 26, providing abrasion and corrosion resistance for the finished product. The coded indicia 18 are normally applied after filling and capping the bottles. In applying the coded indicia, to the selected areas of the resinous surface is applied an ink consisting of a volatile organic solvent capable of softening the resin surface while the areas are still wet with the solvent, the ink solution penetrating the resin layer. The solvent should have a drying time 1À7 to 3À5 times as long as n-butyl acetate, e.g. alcohols, esters, ketones and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Aromatic hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbons may also be used. Specific solvents of too low or high volatility may be blended with other solvents to optimize drying times. A suitable solvent may be one containing 50 to 75 wt. per cent of denatured ethyl alcohol and 25 to 50 wt. per cent of methyl isobutyl ketone, preferably 59À75 and 39À75% respectively. Fluorescent dyes are specified according to trade names and the Colour Index. The fluorescent dye in the ink may be in amount # wt. per cent and 5 wt. per cent., preferably “ to ¢ wt. per cent. Container caps generally and container bodies per se are instanced for masking. Reference is made to food products bearing dates or other information on their containers corresponding to age or batch.</p> |
