Copper or copper alloys are deonidized and degasified by introducing a reducing gas followed by an inert gas in finely divided form into the molten metal. Alternatively the reducing gas may be followed by a mixture of reducing gas and inert gas or the two gases may be added simultaneously throughout the treatment. In the apparatus shown the melt is fed to container 2 which has previously been flushed with inert or reducing gas and is treated with gas introduced through porous plugs 6, 8, exhaust gas escaping from the container via the orifice in lid 22 around stopper 12. The treated metal is run into hopper 4 by raising stopper 12, the hopper having previously been filled with nitrogen from inlet 36. Finally the metal is run into ingot mould 38 while protected by nitrogen introduced into gas bon 42 from inlet 44. The operation may be performed with continuous metal flow, a continuous casting installation replacing the mould 38. |
