Each compressor cylinder is coupled to an element preventing it from compressing the refrigerant gas and operated by the high pressure of the latter. The high pressure gas is fed to these elements by a detector responsive to the compressor pump oil pressure, which cuts off the high pressure gas when the oil pressure exceeds a given value to allow one or a series of cylinders to be brought into operation. The pump oil pressure is fed to the detector with a certain delay so that when the compressor and the pump are started up, the operation of all the compressor cylinders is suppressed for an initial interval. The compressor can be used for a cold store and the device allows it to be started without any load.
