New thenoyl-phenoxy-acetic acid esters are of formula (I): (where R is H, hydroxymethyl, methoxymethyl, ethoxymethyl, methylthiomethyl or ethylthiomethyl). (I) are diuretics with less gastrointestinal side-effects and greater potency than the parent free acid (known from DE 2048372) after oral admin. Specific (I) are (I; R is methoxymethyl) and (I; R is ethoxymethyl).
