Glass is produced by mixing the latter with (A) glassy mineral (pref. volcanic) powder such as perlite, amorphous basalt, pumice, or SiO2, ferrosilicon furnace smoke. (B) metal oxides, comprising SiO2, CdO, BaO, SrO, Al2O3, MgO, ZnO, TiO2, Fe2O3, CuO, Co2O3, MnO2, (C) siliceous fillers pref. mineral wool scrap talc, magnesite, quartz, slag. and (D) gas-generators which evolve gas on heating, resulting in a cellular product, pref. from ferrosilicon and/or organics pref. sugar, molasses glycol, glycerin, oils, hdcbns. Particles size is pref. 40 micron, Water glass can be neutralised with H3PO4 until slight potn. of SiO2. Heating to 250-400 C gives a heterogeneous prod, to 800 C gives a homogeneous prod. Autoclaving before cooling increases strength. In an example 100 wt. part of Na water glass 37/40 Be., 15 of expanded perlite powder, 8 of ferrosilicon, 3 kaolin and 3 of slag were mixed and heated at 300 C. |
