Al(alloy) article consists of an Al substrate, a porous unsealed anodic oxide layer on the substrate, and electrolytically deposited metallic projections which are separate and distinct and randomly distributed with a root portion anchoring them in >=1 pore in the oxide layer. From the root portion the projections extend above the oxide layer in a bulbous configuration having an undercut profile.
