Cooling system for IC engine - has auxiliary control on thermostatic valves to prevent overheating during starting

A pump (2) circulates cooling water through the engine (1). A thermostat (22) controls a three way valve (4) which can take the water either directly (5) back to the engine or through a subsidiary circuit (8). The subsidiary circuit takes the water through an oil cooler (10) and a supercharger after cooler (11). It contains another thermostatically controlled valve (9,22) which opens and closes a bypass (7) round a water cooling radiator. Both valves (4,9) have further controls (13) from the starter motor (14). During starting the flow through the oil and air coolers (10,11) and radiator (6) is kept open irrespective of the temps. This prevents rapid temp. rises when the engine is suddenly loaded.
