Mould for alumino-thermite welding - of two railway rails which possess widely different cross=sections, and are sepd. from each other by gap filled by weld metal

Mould is made in two halves which are placed round the ends of the two rails being joined together. Near the ends of the rails, the mould possesses two recesses which create a bulge where the weld metal joins the end of each rail; and the remainder of the mould cavity forms a short stepless rail section made of solidified weld metal. The advantage is that it is not necessary to machine one of the rails so its cross-section matches that of the other rail; and the initial rail gap can be 7-25 cm.
