The buffer block consisting of a stack of resilient discs (1) mounted on a spindle, uses ribs on one surface of each disc which lock into grooves on the adjacent surface of the next disc. These discs also incorporate additional projections (9) which are positioned so that they are in contact with flat surfaces (10) on adjacent discs, or with similar projections on adjacent discs. In alternative designs, these projections are in contact with the flat faces of intermediate metal discs between the resilient discs. The metal discs can incorporate openings to allow the first type of projecting ribs to pass through. The projections may be positioned immediately adjacent to depressions in the resilient discs.
