The invention relates to a process for the preparation of bifurandiones from carbon monoxide and acetylene or from its derivatives using a cobalt carbonyl catalyst. Within the meaning of the invention, a procedure is used in which one or more compounds of the general formula AB<1>B<2>B<3> - in which A represents a phosphorus, arsenic or antimony atom, and B<1>, B<2> and B<3> independently of one another denote a C1-6 alkyl, phenyl or C1-4 alkoxy group - are added to the cobalt carbonyl catalyst in a ratio from 0.05 to 20, preferably from 0.25 to 4, if appropriate in the form of an adduct formed as a ligand with a part of the cobalt carbonyl catalyst or with its total amount. The process according to the invention makes the preparation of bifurandiones more economically possible, with higher operating safety and with a significantly lower pressure in comparison to the process used earlier. <IMAGE>
