Voltage stabilisation of electric insulator - of silane-grafted plastics, by crosslinking in steam atmos. and applied electric field

Stabilisation of electric insulators based on thermoplastics, e.g. (co)polyolefins, or elastomers alone or in blends, which tend to crosslink on the action of moisture after grafting crosslinking aids, e.g. silanes, to the basic mol. and are treated with voltage stabiliser additives (I), involves exposing the extruded or injection moulded material to a water vapour or steam atmos. at 50-100 (60-80) deg.C and simultaneously exposing it to an electric field during crosslinking. The material is specified as cable insulation. Dielectrophoretic diffusion to the points of max. field strength combined with thermal diffusion lead to optimum stabilisation at weak spots.
