An energy storage and recovery system is operative to store excess over demand energy generated by a steam cycle electrical generating plant during slack electricity demand periods and to recover the stored energy to provide supplemental electricity during peak demand periods. The system utilises one or more moving bed heat exchangers for transferring heat between the steam cycle of the power plant and a moving bed of refractory particles. For instance, sand (13) flowing through a heat exchanger (14) is heated by steam from the generating plant during slack demand periods and, during peak demand periods, the heated sand heats feedwater of the generating plant in a heat exchanger (18). Pipes and valves establish fluid communication between the heat exchangers (14, 18) and the steam cycle to supply fluid to selectively heat the moving bed of sand or to receive heat from the bed, as the case may be. One or more insulated silo(s) (16) are provided for storing the sand or other refractory particles and means are provided for transporting the particles between the silo(s) (16) and the heat exchangers (14,18).
|
