On leaving a moulding machine, the tile or other prod. is subjected to a surface treatment, which includes spraying with at least one powdered oxide, and then with a liq. enamel or slurry providing a rustic finish; the tile is next dried and baked. The pref. process consists of wetting the surface of the moulding, and spraying it with sand or other fine aggregate. The moulding is then subjected to friction by a brush; sprayed with oxide(s) and then with an enamel or rustic slip; and dried and baked. The pref. aopts. includes a brush with a profile to match the surface of the moulding; and the brush is mounted on levers driven by a motor so it follows a circular path while being reciprocated above the moulding.
