[Also in Division B2] A method of treating a sheet substrate material (e.g. paper) having a coating of an extruded polyolefin comprises applying to the polyolefin surface a coating of an acidic aqueous composition comprising an aqueous silica sol, an acid-stable, organic polymeric film forming material and an acid, and thereafter drying the product either at an elevated temperature, or at ambient temperature and subsequently heating the product, whereby the dried coating on the polyolefin surface possesses absorptive properties. The acid may be nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, citric acid or acetic acid. The film forming material may comprise polyvinyl alcohol a carboxymethyl cellulose. The coated composition may further comprise an organic solvent a wetting agent and/or a salt having a polyvalent metal cation, an inorganic pigment and/or a particulate organic material whereby a matt finish is produced and the abrasiveness and/or absorptiveness of the product is increased. A light sensitive diazo solution may be applied to the top coating. |
