17-Alpha:alkyl-4,15-androstadiene-3-one derivs. - topical antiandrogens effective against acne, seborrhoea, alopecia and hirsutism

17alpha-alkylsteroids of formula (I) are new (where R1 is H or acyl; R2 is 2-6C alkyl; X is O or the gp.(II); R3 is H or acyl). When used topically, (I) have antiandrogenous properties, against both existing and added androgens. (I) have been found to inhibit the testosterone stimulated growth of flank organs and sebaceous glands in the ears of castrated male hamsters without significantly affecting other androgen dependant organs such as prostate and testicles. (I) can be used for topical treatment of acne, seborrhoea, alopecia and excess hairiness.
