The headlamp is for a motor vehicle, and has a light collecting reflector and a light plate which is used to direct both the light reflected from the reflector and the direct light emanating from the light source. The light source is mounted near the focal point of the light plate and the reflector. The reflector has a trough-shaped design with a number of reflecting surfaces (2,9). It collects the light (5) approximately on to a focal line (3) passing through the light source (4). The light plate contains a prism (7), which deflects the light towards a plane (15) along the focal line.
