The coating of a steel workpiece with titanium boride, titanium nitride and/or titanium carbide from a gas phase containing a titanium donor and a supplier of boron, nitrogen and/or carbon, at elevated temperature as a thin layer gives increased hardness and wear resistance of the surface of the workpiece, if this surface is carburised before the deposition of the thin layer to such an extent that, after the deposition thereof, it still has a higher carbon content than before the carburisation.
