PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound, useful for the preparation of dyes, pigments, etc., by treatment of hydroquinone with a molecular-oxygen-containing gas in aqueous HCl solution using the chloride, phosphate or acetate of copper or iron as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Monochlorohydroquinone is obtained in >=80% yield by treatment of hydroquinone with molecular-oxygen-containing gas (e.g. 02 or air, optionally diluted with an inert gas, e.g. N2) preferably in 5-12N HCl aqueous solution in the presence of a catalyst selected from Cu and Fe chlorides, hydroxides, sulfates, phosphates, and acetates. To 1mol of hydroquinone, preferably 0.05-0.2mol of the catalyst, 1-20mol (esp. 3-10mol) of HCl, and 0.5-10mol (esp. 1-5mol) of mole cular-oxygen-containing gas as O2, are used. The reaction pressure is preferably 2- 5 atm (gauge pressure). |
