PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound in high selectivity, suppressing the decomposition of alcohols, by the selective alkylation of phenols at the ortho-position in the presence of a chromium oxide-containing catalyst, and a compound selected from sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, etc. CONSTITUTION:Alkylphenols having one or more alkyl groups at ortho position, and useful as a raw material of polyphenylene ether, etc., are prepared by the catalytic gas-phase reaction of phenols having H atom at the ortho-position and denoted by the formula (R1-R4 are H, 1-4C saturated hydrocarbon group, or aromatic hydrocarbon group) with 1-4C lower alcohols in the presence of a catalyst containing chromium oxide or manganese oxide, and in the coexistence of a mixed gas containing at least one compound selected from sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, H2S, CO and CO2, at 310-470 deg.C and a gas space velocity of 250-20,000hr<-1>. EFFECT:The rate of deposition of oxygen-containing hydrocarbons to the surface of the catalyst can be reduced, and the regeneration cycle of the catalyst can be elongated. |
