Drinking water filter has a filter body with inlet and outlet branches and a filter cartridge or element attached to it. This is surrounded by a transparent glass bowl which is fixed onto the filter body. The bowl is covered by an opaque sheath which prevents light from reaching the bowl. This allows the filter element to be inspected for fouling but does not allow the growth of algae inside the glass which would obscure the element. The sheath is designed to fit closely onto the glass bowl.
