The tabletop which is fixed to the bedside table frame so that it can be raised and lowered into and from a position of use is coupled for articulated movement to two brake cylinders (30) which are guided in guide tubes (25) fixed to the frame. The brake cylinders operate when the tabletop is raised from its position of use and set parallel to the frame. The brake forces produced on the brake cylinders counteract the actual weight of the tabletop so that the latter can be slowly and silently lowered by hand until reaching the lower end position against the frame which is defined by a stopper (26) which limits the fall space.
