The set of bearings for a multi-section crankshaft has different gaps between the shaft dia. and the bearing shells, corresponding to the different loadings on the shaft. The overall effect of the bearings is to spread the loading and reduce the vibration and noise. The bearing shells are of identical size, with the shaft turned down to adjust the thickness of lubricant. This provides a universal fitting and a low cost. Wear is considerably reduced on the system.
