The totality of the activated charcoal situated in the filter is no longer exposed from the outset to the water to be purified, so that extremely pure water is not generated initially, but with a great decrease in the degree of purity occurring subsequently. Now, during the initial start-up of the filter bed, only a part-layer of the activated charcoal layer which can be introduced as a maximum is arranged in the filter bed in the form of fresh activated charcoal. Additional fresh activated charcoal is then metered into the filter bed in accordance with the amount of water to be purified fed to the filter bed. Thus, during the entire period of use of the activated charcoal present in the filter bed, a substantially uniform degree of purity of the water is achieved. The metering of the addition of fresh activated charcoal can be well matched to the respective degree of contamination of the water to be purified so that even a chemical accident can be more specifically counteracted. |
