A process for recovering interferon comprises forming, from a solution containing an interferon produced by induced cells of human origin, a waterinsolubilized sulfated polysaccharide/interferon adsorbate and then selectively eluting the interferon with an aqueous solution of an inorganic salt.

The water-insolubilized sulfated polysaccharide/interferon adsorbate may be formed either by contacting the solution containing interferon with a water-insolubilized sulfated polysaccharide or alternatively by contacting the solution containing interferon with a sulfated polysaccharide to form a sulfated polysaccharide/ interferon adsorbate and then contacting the sulfated polysaccharide/ interferon adsorbate with a carrier capable of rendering the sulfated polysaccharide water-insoluble.
