The element is preferably made of metal such as aluminium or aluminium alloy on which is formed a hygroscopic surface layer of the oxide of the metal. This layer can be formed by a heat treatment of the body portion in water or moist air after rendering the surface layer porous in a pickling bath, and may be supplemented by an impregnation with a hygroscopic salt such as lithium chloride. In the use of the transfer elements in a regenerative humidity heat transfer apparatus, treatment to provide the hygroscopic layer is effected after the gluing together into an assembly of a plurality of the heat transfer elements comprising corrugated sheets 2 alternating with noncorrugated sheets 1. |
