Electroslag melting for building up diameter of cylindrical ingots

Large cylindrical forging blocks are produced by building up the diameter of cylindrical forged base pieces using a modified electroslag remelting process, in which the rectangular crucible is made up by two walls formed by the workpiece o.d. and the previously made edge extension, and two walls of conventional copper cooled section. This permits the building up of large forging ingots from small o.d. cylindrical starting blanks. It also permits composition variations.
