Selective metal chelating compounds of the general formula I (FORMULA) wherein Rs and Rs are the same or different groups and each is Cu to Cu alkyl or hydroxyalkyl; and Rs is hydrogen, halogen, a Cu to Cu alkoxygroup or a Cu to Cu alkyl group. These organic chelating agents selectively chelate copper and mercury ions. The chelate complexes of the compounds with copper and mercury act as carriers of these ions in biological organic matrices.
