<p>Precision high-quality casting, esp. of spheroidal graphite cast iron, is achieved by surrounding mould of non-magnetic refractory material with supporting particulate magnetic material which holds mould in position. The mould with supporting material is exposed to a magnetic field which is maintained during casting and during subsequent solidication, to magnetise supporting material. Castings have min. shrinkage or shrink holes. Support raises mould wall rigidity and resistance to bowing under load. Partic. magnetic material used is steel shot, but Ni or other shot, powder or granules can be used.</p> |
