<p>METHOD FOR DETECTING MICROBIAL PATHOGENS EMPLOYING A CUSHIONING AGENT of the disclosure An improved method and apparatus are described for detecting microbial pathogens within a sample fluid, such as blood, in which a confined sterile zone containing the sample fluid is centrifuged. According to the novel feature, the centrifugation is carried out in the presence of a high density, non-toxic, water immiscible, liquid cushioning agent, such as a fluorinated hydrocarbon. The apparatus includes an enclosed centrifugation receptacle sealably closed with injectable closure means, the interior of the receptacle comprising an evacuated space maintained at a lower than atmospheric pressure, adjacent the dushioning agent which is capable of collecting substantially all of the microbial pathogens which pass out of suspension from the sample fluid without loss of microbial pathogens to interstitial spaces present in the receptacle.</p> |
