Installation to maintain a tension of predetermined level in a metal strip has two rollers guiding the strip between them, the first of which is driven. The second roller (18) has a swivel bearing round a lever arm (17) relative to the first roller. A momentum applied to the lever arm (17) during the movement of the band is measured by a power measurement transformer (28) and the drive (15) of the first roller (10) is regulated depending on the size of this momentum in such a way that a predetermined tension is applied to the band. When more than one pair of rolls are used it is not necessary to couple their drives via a common control circuit.
