The compressor is intended for an i.c. engine. It comprises a reciprocating piston (4) which is resiliently retained between two springs (11,12) in a chamber acting as the cylinder (1). The piston separates a compressor chamber (3) from a drive chamber (2), which connects to the engine intake duct (6) so that the pressure fluctuations therein move the piston. The compressor chamber has a non-return inlet valve (7) and a non-return outlet valve (8) connected (26) to an air receiver (9). The piston may be a diaphragm (16) piston. The springs are preferably coil springs and may have different soring rates.
