A heat-reflecting material for use as a wall covering or for insulating purposes comprises a backing of paper or plastic material coated on one or both sides with an infra-red- reflective metallic layer less than 30 nm in thickness. The metal is covered with a protective lacquer several microns thick, on top of which is a lacquer some tens of microns thick which appears coloured in wavelengths of 0.4-0.8 microns, but is largely transparent to wavelengths of 4-20 microns. The top layer may consist of an infra-red-transparent plastic material in which are dispersed optically-coloured pigments of a controlled particle size which promote interference at wavelength around 10 microns to increase the infra-red reflectivity. The material combines good heat reflection with aesthetically pleasing appearance, and avoids the problem of electrical conductivity of the metallic layer. |
