A sulphate solution obtained by leaching a lateritic ore containing iron, nickel and cobalt, and magnesium may be firstly treated with magnesium hydroxide to precipitate the metals as hydroxides, separate them from the solution and treat the resultant solution with lime according to the invention to form a fine precipitate of Mg(OH) 2 and a coarse precipitate of gypsum, which may be heat treated to regenerate lime and acid gas.
