Binder for flux for arc welding rod

Flux coating for arc welding rod comprises a finely divided binder and flux, the binder being readily dispersable in water and comprising a fluoride, a mixture of fluorides, an aluminate, an alkali hydroxide or carbonate, at least one of these supplementary materials being present when binder contains an aluminate. The binder is present in sufficient amt. to ensure a sufficient strength after adequate mixing with flux and water and drying and firing at 340-510 degrees C. The prior silicate binders, tended to form unsuitable slags with the flux. For some purposes the aluminate is omitted. The mixts. have similar humidity to prior art silicate mixts. and have similar resistance to rehydration.
