<p>A hollow-plate element providing a fluid pass for a heat exchanger (e.g. a refrigerant evaporator) comprises a pair of plate members joined together at their edge portions and forming between plate midportions a flow path for said fluid extending between inlet and outlet manifolds formed at the ends of the element by configurations 28'. At said plate midportions are formed rows of separated ribs 42a-h, each rib being angled obliquely to the flow path between the manifolds and each row extending normal to the flow path. The ribs prevent direct linear flow across the rows between the inlet and outlet manifolds. At one end at least of each row the ribs e.g. 42e, 42h are spaced from the edge portion of the plate to provide for reduced pressure drop, a channel 60 forming a by-pass flow relative to the tortuous flow across the ribs 42. Such a channel may be provided both edges of the plate and through the middle of the rows of ribs (e.g. Figure 7). <IMAGE></p> |
