1,151,330. Welding by fusion; soldering. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. 24 April, 1968 [26 April, 1967], No. 19281/68. Heading B3R. Workpieces are bonded, e.g. fusion welded or soldered, by drawing a vacuum to pull a flexible transparent cover on to the workpieces to hold them in position, and applying radiant energy through the cover to effect the bonding. Leads of circuits or components 23 may be bonded to tantalum substrates of a circuit 22 by locating the workpieces on a work-holder 12 comprising a perforated drum 12, covering the workpieces by a sheet 21 of transparent plastic, evacuating the drum 12 and heating using a ruby laser beam 36 or infra-red or ultra-violet energy directed through the sheet 21 on to the workpieces. If desired, the components 23 may be secured to adhesive patches on the sheet 21 to facilitate positioning by moving the sheet 21 prior to applying the vacuum. The drum 12 is secured by welding to a second perforated drum 16 which when evacuated clamps to a fixed base 39. Alternatively, the work-holder 12 may be clamped electromagnetically to the base 39. |
