1383817 Lime; lemon and banana flavour COLGATE-PALMOLIVE CO 6 March 1972 [18 March 1971] 10319/72 Heading A2B [Also in Division A5] A reaction-product mix having the flavour and fragrance of steam-distilled natural lime oil is prepared by refluxing a mixture of citral, acid and water for ¢ to 5 hours and distilling the refluxed material. The reaction product mix contains 60% by weight terpene hydrocarbons, 35% unidentified oxygen-containing compounds, 1-methyl-1, 3-cyclohexadiene and trace amounts of 3-methylene-1-cyclohexene, 1-methyl-1, 5-cyclohexadiene, isoprene, n-heptane, isopropyl formate, acetone and isopropanol. The acid may be a mineral acid such as hydrochloric, phosphoric and sulphuric acids or an organic acid such as benzoic, oxalic, tartaric, malic, maloric and citric acids. The citral used may be synthetic or natural such as obtained from oil of lemon grass, Eucalyptus staigeriana or Litsea cubeba. The reaction-product mix may be added to give a lime, lime-lemon or banana taste to soft drinks, candies, foods, ice-cream or confectionery. |
