Fermentation liquors or crude solutions containing thienamycin with the formula <IMAGE> are purified with the aid of a number of ion-exchange resins. The first of these to be used is an anion- exchanger of the type of cross-linked polystyrene trimethyl ammonium in the HCO3- cycle. This is followed by elution with a cold aqueous solution of CO2, and concluded by adsorption on and elution from a cross- linked polystyrene resin. The intermediate steps can be varied, e.g. the first step can be repeated, and so can the use of the various resins and eluates. The resulting thienamycin is considerably purer and more stable than that prepared so far, and it is obtained in a higher yield.
