The backing layer may be in the form of blocks 12 of graphite, which fit into compartments defined by metallic spacing members 13. Steel plates 5, 8 and 14, 15 serve as encasing members for the two layers. A number of such double layer units may be combined to form a multilayer construction or alternatively the individual layers may be combined with layers of other material. Certain compounds of tantalum, titanium or zirconium may be used instead of graphite.
