The belt conveyor contains a drive device designed as a round-link chain (30, 38, 42) and a guide rail (26, 27) of cruciform cross-section. The vertical recess (33, 34; 36, 37) in the guide rail is open at the top and at the bottom, the upper aperture (33, 34) being provided as a guide for the connecting members (23) to the support elements (17) and the lower aperture (36, 37) as a discharge for the possible impurities. The belt conveyor prevents the deposition of dirt in the drive device, which greatly improves the service life and operational reliability. <IMAGE>
