PREPARATION OF ALKYLENE GLYCOL

PURPOSE:To prepare easily, economically and selectively an alkylene glycol without formation of the other alkylene glycols, by reacting a >=3C alkylene oxide with water in the presence of Mo metal and/or an Mo compound as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An alkylene glycol (e.g. monopropylene glycol) is prepared by reacting a >=3C alkylene oxide (e.g. propylene oxide) with water in the presence of Mo metal (Mo metal having high specific surface area and pref. finely dispersible in the system) and/or a Mo compound (pref. sodium molybdate etc.) as catalysts. The amount of the catalyst is >=0.01wt%, preferably 1-20wt% on the bases of the alkylene oxide.
