The method and apparatus utilise the principle of differential flow classification in which the gas stream or a portion is passed through a separator whose separation efficiency is size dependent. The electrostatic noise of a particular fraction is related to the mass flow rate of the solids in that fraction, and is unlike the DC component, little affected by leaks or probe surface condition. The apparatus takes off a sample from the gas stream and feeds it to the separator. The apparatus also feeds the fractions back to the gas stream after the electrostatic noises have been compared. The two fractions are recombined before they are fed back to the gas stream.
