The hinged fitment for an adjustable back rest, especially in a vehicle, incorporates a locking piece. The locking piece consists of a cogged segment (14) concentric to the pivot axle and on the back rest; and a locking slide piece (21) which engages with the teeth (13) of the cogged segment (14) and is position on the seat. The locking slide piece (21) is moved by a lever (25). The locking slide piece (21) can be moved axially as well as radially to the pivot axle (12) in a bearing cage (18) on the hinge part (11) on the seat.
