The diastereomer of 2,3-dihydro-2-methyl-3[2- (dimethylamino)propyl]-3-phenyl-1H-indole-1-carboxaldehyde of the formula and its two enantiomers, and salts of these compounds are prepared by formylation of 2,3-dihydro-2-methyl-3-[2-(dimethylamino)propyl]-3- phenyl-1H-indole or by reductive formylation of 2-methyl-3-[2- (dimethylamino)propyl]-3-phenyl-3H-indole, and these compounds are used in pharmaceuticals. The compounds have antitussive effects, and the racemate and the (-)enantiomer also have bronchodilator effects.
