Circuitry suitable for powering portable devices such as tools, appliances and the like provides for either battery or AC line operation with no change in configuration. When operating with an AC line supply, device operation and battery charging take place simultaneously at light loads and the battery automatically boosts the AC supply to the device motor when operating at relatively heavy loads.
