4-Amino-6-(2-carboxyphenyl)-3-mercapto-1,2,4-triazin-5(4H)-one is prepared by the reaction of phthalonic acid or its potassium salt with thiocarbohydrazide. The product melts at 180 DEG at which temperature it decarboxylates, resolidifies, and remelts at 235 DEG -240 DEG as the known 6-phenyl derivative. The compound is useful as a selective herbicide.
